Throughout the house, details designed by Henry Mather Greene highlight the energetic flow of the house. The hand-carved mirror in the front entrance, the hand pulls of built-in cabinets, bookshelves, curio cabinets and wall sconces. Batchelder Tiles

Both fireplaces feature original Batchelder tile, a hallmark of early 20th-century California artistry. Batchelder tiles were a popular feature of the American Arts and Crafts movement and can be found in prominent buildings including the Hotel Hershey, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Art Glass

Greene designed the gorgeous art glass in the dining room to highlight Mabel Gould’s love of nature. The glass used to be the doors to the China cabinet that was repurposed into a window in the 1980s to allow light to luminate the design.

Randell Makinson Custom Light

In 1981, Randell Makinson, architect and the first director of The Gamble House in Pasadena, CA, was hired to renovate The Gould House. Taking inspiration from the custom crafted lights of The Gamble House, he crafted this unique Arts and Crafts piece which hangs in the living room.

History Noted

Both Thomas and Mabel attended college. Thomas studied law at the University of Michigan. A lover of nature, Mabel studied botany at Stanford. Each side of the English fireplace features a relief of the crest of their alma mater.
